China’s Crackdown on Deceptive Trademarks in 2026

China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) continues its 2026 nationwide crackdown on deceptive “scheming trademarks”, targeting registered marks that mislead consumers on product quality, breeding methods and product attributes. This regulatory initiative aims to rectify unfair market competition and strengthen the credibility of China’s trademark protection system.
Since the campaign launched in 2023, CNIPA has rejected massive misleading trademark applications and invalidated over 3,300 problematic registered marks. A major enforcement sweep in late April 2026 invalidated 1,127 deceptive trademarks, prominently including the core trademarks of a famous local pork brand “Yi Hao Tu Zhu” (meaning No.1 Native Pig). The authority ruled that terms implying “native breeding” on commercial livestock products constitute consumer deception, violating China’s Trademark Law.
This ongoing campaign delivers strong reassurance to foreign enterprises operating in China. It eliminates unfair competitive advantages for those brands relying on misleading trademark tactics, builds a more transparent, rule-based market environment, and reinforces China’s zero-tolerance stance on IP irregularities. Moving forward, foreign businesses are advised to ensure their trademark filings are factual, accurate and non-deceptive to comply with updated Chinese IP regulatory standards.
